Reimbursement

Coverage and reimbursement decisions are made individually by private and public insurers. These decisions may be at the local, regional, or national level.

In the United States, BG Medicine has initiated the process to obtain an analyte-specific CPT code for the measurement of galectin-3 in plasma or serum. The earliest this code may be available is for the 2013 fee schedule.

However, the BGM Galectin-3™ assay is an ELISA which in accordance with coding principles and regulations must be coded using the method code for such test:

  • CPT 83520 - Immunoassay, analyte, quantitative; not otherwise specified
